In Practice: An Educational Experience at Crescendo Detroit
Crescendo Detroit is a nonprofit music education organization dedicated to nurturing young people through high-quality instruction, mentorship, and community. Morris Hayes’ decision to bring this program to Detroit reflects a shared commitment to access, discipline, and whole-child development, as well as the city’s deep musical legacy and its meaningful place in Prince’s story. The partnership offered a natural opportunity to connect lived experience, cultural context, and education.
This example illustrates how Morris Hayes’ educational programs translate real-world professional experience into age-appropriate, mission-aligned learning that resonates with students, educators, and families alike.
PURPOSE AND CONNECTION
When Morris Hayes visited Crescendo Detroit in May 2025, the experience extended far beyond a traditional workshop. What unfolded was a multi-layered educational encounter—blending storytelling, mentorship, performance, and genuine connection.
CULTURAL CONTEXT AND PERSONAL JOURNEY
The program opened with an age-appropriate introduction to musical legacy and cultural impact, helping students understand not only who Prince was, but why creativity, discipline, and innovation still matter. Morris then shared his own journey—from church in rural Arkansas to the highest professional levels of the music industry—speaking candidly about preparation, humility, confidence, and navigating pressure.
A COLLABORATIVE, CUSTOMIZED APPROACH
The visit was developed in close collaboration with Crescendo Detroit to ensure a highly customized experience. Morris and his team worked directly with faculty in advance, providing preparation materials and shaping the session around Crescendo’s students, age ranges, and goals. During the visit, students moved seamlessly between conversation, listening, and hands-on participation—creating an experience that felt intentional and deeply engaging.
FROM INSTRUCTION TO PERFORMANCE
Students quickly moved from listening to active participation. Having prepared music in advance, they joined Morris for a collaborative jam session that transformed the room. Faculty played alongside students as energy rose and confidence became visible.
LEARNING BEYOND THE SESSION
Even after the formal session ended, learning continued. Students gathered around Morris as he demonstrated techniques, answered questions, and spoke about practice, sound, and staying curious. He remained fully present—engaging one-on-one and lingering beyond the scheduled program.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Later, Morris joined students and staff for a simple meal—no spotlight, no separation. Just conversation, laughter, and authentic presence.
FROM THE FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
As Crescendo Detroit’s Executive Director, Damien Crutcher, shared: “His journey, work ethic, humility, and commitment to giving back set a powerful example. I have no doubt his presence will inspire our students in ways that stay with them long after the workshop ends.”
A PARENT'S PERSPECTIVE
“Representation matters in so many forms, and as a family of faith, we were moved by how he honored his mother and upbringing while fully walking in his gift.
Moments like this invite reflection, and what comes from the heart truly reaches the heart. Mr. Hayes’ story has given our sons even more confidence in their own musical journeys.”
— Crescendo Detroit Parent
LASTING IMPACT
By the end of the day, the visit had become a defining moment for the Crescendo community—reinforcing the organization’s mission to support the whole child by building confidence, character, and possibility alongside musical skill. The impact was strong enough that Crescendo plans to bring Morris back in 2026 for an expanded, longer-form engagement.
For Crescendo Detroit, the program delivered more than inspiration. It strengthened student confidence, reinforced habits of preparation and discipline, and created meaningful connection across students, educators, and families—demonstrating how thoughtfully designed artist-led programs can align with an organization’s mission while leaving a lasting impression beyond a single visit.
